Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has declared his readiness to defend himself against allegations of financial misconduct, insisting that he remains proud of his record in office.

Speaking in a recent interview conducted in Hausa, Malami accused security agencies of breaching his constitutional rights during the course of investigations into his affairs. He alleged that operatives carried out searches of his homes and business premises without prior notice or his presence.

According to him, “I have spent time in custody with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, at Kuje Prison, and with the Department of State Services. I believe it is all God’s will, and I accept it, but I will defend myself.”

Malami further maintained that due process was not followed, stressing that he was denied his constitutional right to be present during the searches.

“They violated my rights by searching my houses and business premises without notifying me. Constitutionally, I have the right to be present during such searches,” he stated.

Reaffirming his position, the former AGF said he had no regrets about his time in office.

“Everything I did was in line with my understanding of the law and my responsibilities,” he added.

Malami, alongside his wife, Asabe Bashir, and son, Abdulaziz Malami, is currently facing a 16-count charge bordering on alleged money laundering filed by the EFCC.
